My Man - Foul Brood

My Man is a folky-pop-rock band from Toronto, consisting of Rachael, Jacob, Matt, and Lautaro. Rachael sent me this album, and informed me that this 3-song demo is available for free, and that they will be coming out with a 7" some time in the new year. Nice folk-rock like Said the Whale or New Socks. If anything, My Man definitely has more musically interesting songs than a lot of comparable bands. Definitely a winner! Keep an eye on this band.

The Coast - Expatriate (2008)

The Coast was a Canadian band that received a bunch of acclaim and promptly broke up. They're a pretty rad indie band. Catchy, radio friendly. Some folky influence, and i think i detect some Matt Good influence. Maybe a bit like Wintersleep?
I guess I'm saying they're pretty Canadian.
Good album!

Pity Sex - Dark World

Download

Pity Sex is a great band from Ann Arbor, MI. Last.fm says, "sad boys and one sad girl".
I say, "the truly delightful musical offspring of Page France and Algernon Cadwallader (and Snowing was there too)". That is to say, a lovely mix of pop-punk, indie, and emo music.

I posted last year about a band called For The Agenda. Well, he (Anton Kropp) has released a new EP called On The Negative. Now, I loved all the previous For The Agenda recordings, but so far i do think i like this one the best. Anton emailed me to tell me about his new release, so I think everyone should check it out! It is a very unique and interesting album.

Nick Stutsman from Sturgis, MI is a songwriter also known for being in bands Midwest Pen Pals, Park Jefferson, and Merchant Ships. This is a super cool, sad EP. I've been listening to Park Jefferson a lot this week, so this was an awesome find. Just fantastic songwriting all the way through.

The Republic of Wolves - His Old Branches

The Republic of Wolves is a band from Long Island, NY. They have a real neat atmospheric indie-folk type of sound. Kind of like Phosphorescent, if you are familiar with Phosphorescent.

Carissa's Wierd - Tucson (2011)

http://www.mediafire.com/?vm19vnd4k1e9e82

Okay i just had to post this. Some of you may not have heard, but Carissa's Wierd released this EP in September after an eight-year hiatus. Anyone who has spent some time around my blog should know that CW is one of my favourite bands of all-time, so this is somewhere in the neighborhood of the best news ever.

It is definitely in my top hopes right now that Carissa's Wierd continues to make more music, and not return to their hiatus. I hope they don't mind me posting this but i want to make sure everyone knows about it.

The New & Very Welcome - Drowning In It! (2007)

Another great find! The New & Very Welcome is a young lady named Jessica (can i say young lady? that makes me sound 100 years old i am not 100 years old i swear i think i am still 24?) . It reminds me somewhat of Carissa's Wierd or Jenn Ghetto's music as S. So since i love both those bands i really dig the hell out of this.
From her website:

"Hello. My name is Jessica.  I am 22 years old.  I am kind of a jerk.  I am full of spite and constant longing.(...)  You probably haven’t heard of me and you probably won’t.  I began writing songs in 2004 to help myself cope with reoccurring problems concerning the general nature of my relationships with other human beings.  [It hasn’t really helped.]  I’ve written a lot of songs since then.  Very few am I happy with.  I am awkward, I am shy, and I probably won’t remember your name."

She definitely sounds like my kind of person. Really enjoying this lately, check it out. New album coming December.

AND AND AND she did a 7" of covers of The Saddest Landscape songs oh my goodness that is so fuckin rad (did i ever do a Saddest Landscape post? it appears not)

Annabel - Here We Are Tomorrow

Annabel is a band from Kent, Ohio. This is an EP of theirs. It's like a really cool kinda-shoegazey/emo-but-not-really type of.... thing.

They've got a really great sound, I recommend it.
I mean really if i put it on my blog you can assume i like it. I would never waste my precious gigglebytes on lame music.

EDIT: on Tiny Engines, also distributed by CYLS

Mesita - Cherry Blossoms (2008)

Mesita is a fella from Littleton, Colorado. As is sometimes the case, I haven't been able to find a great deal of information here. This a very cool album... multi-instrumental, indie-electronic type stuff. Reminds me kind of like Adrian Orange or Okay. Very good album! He also has a new album available for purchase/streaming at http://mesita.bandcamp.com/

i don't know what genre tag to give this

Midi & The Modern Dance - Make It Easy on Yourself

Midi & The Modern Dance is a band from Connecticut. This album quite reminds me of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. And i love YHF, so i also super dig this album. One of my readers actually sent me a link to this band ages ago, i just never got around to posting it. So do yourself a favour and check this out.

BARR - Summary

Brendan Fowler plays under the name of BARR. It is a very interesting spoken-word type music, with piano. Some of it is almost Astronautalis-y but also totally different. "The Song is the Single" is super catchy and fan, "Summary" and "Context Ender" are a totally different type of song but still definitely worth listening to.
I would especially recommend you to check out "Context Ender". It's one of those songs you can listen to back-to-back 5 or 6 times in a row.

"but come on what about the other things the criticism of context
like maybe be aware to the fear that that stuff matters like
but you only liked it cause you heard it with him
and the speakers sounded perfect
and you were over the other stuff
and liked the idea of that kind of thing is your new thing
and you heard it and it sounded perfect
and rules that you got it all ever
but maybe the week before would have been even better
maybe not maybe its truly so epic that it is not the context
context would be powerless to something and that is fair
but you know the songs sound better at night in the fall and october
you were fucking listening to massive attack or the peechees in a dorm
in college in 1998 and it wasnt even your room
and it sounded like the best thing youve ever heard
you dont need to change or do anything different "

S - Sadstyle

This is really a very special album. This is the solo project of Jenn Ghetto, formerly of Carissa's Wierd. It seems like Jenn Ghetto may have been the real heart of that band, as this album is as heart-wrenching in every way. Not as orchestrated as Carissa's Wierd, but still really spectacular.
My favourite songs are "I Love You Too...", "Elevator", and "Anti-Love Song".

"and the more i hear the more i want to leave this town behind and leave all of you crying all over someone that you just can't have again love again drink again find someone else that you know cause you know it will make you feel better cause you better feel something why else would you be here"

If anyone still reads this blog (considering how infrequently i update), don't miss this one.

New Socks - Picture Story Friends Goodbye

I was sent this album by a Molly, a member of the band. It is an extremely good album from a band i am not sure i would have heard of otherwise.
Sort of a lovely folk-pop record, kind of like a more interesting Noah and the Whale. Or, at times, somewhat like Nana Grizol but not exactly.
Every song on the album is excellent, which is pretty rare. They use a large selection of instruments, layered without ever falling into the the excessively-baroque trap that some multi-instrumentalists do. Underneath the interesting instrumentation, still, is some absolutely solid songwriting and great lyrics.

Molly describes the band thus:
"New Socks is Ben Morey, Molly Kerker and Becky Lovell. We started playing together in 2008 and released our first album New So(ck)(ng)s in 2009. We've done one tour where we played in 13 states. Our music is made with guitars, accordion, tambourine, bass, ukulele, banjo, keyboards, piano, trumpet and clarinet. We write honest, mostly autobiographical songs. Picture Story Friends Goodbye is our second album and it will be released on October 12th 2010.
We spent a year recording this album ourselves in an old farmhouse we were living in, that was filled with instruments and surrounded by fields of growing things and singing birds (which come through the quietest parts of the album). The album is about leaving, grasping at childhood and lost family and friends, seeing things die, being in love with everyone and trying not to lose them."

My personal favourite tracks are "Summer", "The Boys I Meet", and "Robin Skull".
Buy the album here.
New Socks is raising money for a short vinyl run and tour here. Donate!

The Jazz June - The Medicine (2000)

The Jazz June was a band from Pennsylvania, formed in 1996. This is a really great album, of a 90s-emo sort of sound.

You'd think i'd have more to say having not posted in a month. Nope.

Your Heart Breaks - New Ocean Waves (2005)

Seattle indie-pop band. I've heard them referred to as 'queercore'. I do not know what that means, at least in regards to the music.
"On your MySpace page, you describe your music as "sparse homo pop love songs". What does that mean?

Clyde Peterson: The music is spacious, the words are gay, it's pretty upbeat and the words rhyme, and most of the songs are about trains, getting your whiskey drunk on, and girls. It's the best way I could think of to describe the feeling. It could also say "drunken gay adventure music". That might be another accurate description of the band."
- plan-it-x

Alls i know is that every song on this album is a well-written one. I enjoy it very much.
