Marcelo Zarvos - Sin Nombre OST (2009)

Soundtrack from the movie Sin Nombre (Without Name), a Spanish-language film about, in a nutshell, Mara Salvatrucha. Which is a Central American gang. It's also about immigration. The director spent almost two years researching and spending time with MS gang members, as well as riding on top of trains with immigrants.

The movie is fantastic, so i recommend you watch it.

The soundtrack is also very good. Stylistically it reminds me a lot of Clint Mansell (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream). Except, of course, a lot more Latin-influenced.

Esmerine - If Only A Sweet Surrender To The Nights To Come To Be True (2003)

Post-rock band from Constellation, the Montreal-based label that brought you Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, etc.
Esmerine is similar to the above (and shares some common members) but is primarily cello-based instead of guitar based. The cello is one of my favourite instruments ever. Someday i will purchase one.

Ennio Morricone

Ennio Morricone created the spaghetti western sound for his work on Sergio Leone movies. Even if you're not a fan of old westerns, you have to admit the sound he created for those movies is incredible. The choice of using trumpets, voices, sound effects, and the relatively new electric guitar for a movie score was unheard of at the time and was used because the budget was too low to afford an orchestra.

I made my own little mixtape here because i found Morricone albums either run way too long (31 tracks!?) to actually be able to digest it or miss out on some key songs. So here is a selection. First track here, "The Ecstasy of Gold", is one of the best things i've ever heard.

Gay Witch Abortion - Maverick

Gay Witch Abortion is a band from Minneapolis. I don't know much about them, but they could win in a hilarious band names contest. They sound kinda like a mostly instrumental, louder Black Keys on speed with amps that sound like they're about to explode.

Dirty Three - Ocean Songs (1998) & She Has No Strings Apollo (2003)

.

I used to like instrumental post-rock a lot. Now I mostly don't. I do, however, still love the Dirty Three. They're an Australian band who differentiate themselves from the legions of cloned post-rock bands by the absolutely stunning violin playing of Warren Ellis (also known for his long association with Nick Cave, including working with him on the soundtrack to The Assassination of Jesse James).

I bought a violin in an attempt to be as awesome as Warren Ellis, but it hasn't worked yet as I am godawful at violin.
